1013 1960s Duffryn Yard Port Talbot

1013 1960s Duffryn Yard Port Talbot

An unusual place for a County, must be off a freight.

Certainly a long way from home, and quite possibly having worked a freight or milk empties, 1013 "County of Dorset", now allocated to Swindon Shed from her earlier home at Shrewsbury is seen here at Duffryn Yard in South Wales with some ash residue on top of the bufferbeam showing that the smokebox has been recently cleared.
Her previous home shed at Shrewsbury, in company with Bristol Bath Road had, in the mid 'fifties, shared the distinction of having the most "Counties" on their respective allocations, with six of the class to be found at each of those two locations, the remaining eighteen of the class being spread over six other Motive Power Depots, namely Swindon, Penzance, Truro, Laira, Chester and Neyland.

Displaying her 82C shedplate 1013 " County of Dorset " is a long way from her Swindon home here at Port Talbot's Duffryn Yard Depot in this 1960's image .
Allocated in the mid 'fifties to Shrewsbury, and one of six of her class there at that time, 1013 would have been a regular on the "North to West" passenger rosters, working between Shrewsbury and Newton Abbot, down one day and back the next.
Duffryn Yard Depot was an important Motive Power Depot, housing a large number of heavy freight locomotives and many Pannier Tanks, all associated with the freight and local passenger services within what was the centre of steel production in Wales.

Keith Morris adds "Swindon Counties were regular on the Kensington - Whitland Milk train - which changed engines at Felin Fran on the Swansea District line. The loco would have gone to Landore (87E) via the Morriston branch. After Landore closed - the loco would have run to 87A (Court Sart) or 87B Duffryn Yard for servicing."
