1027 1955 Whitland
Neg said 'near Wolverhampton' which isn't much help but we are now sure it is Whitland. Two CRE coaches in the train. Peter Kerslake says "1027 County of Stafford was allocated to 87H which was Neyland at this date so that might narrow it down a little, being one of four Counties there. The leading Centenary coach, with its distinctive recessed doors, is a long way from home wherever this location is, having been introduced many years earlier by the G.W.R. especially for the Cornish Riviera workings between Paddington and Penzance . Not really what the enthusiasts had expected to come from Swindon in 1945 the thirty members of the County class had their advantages as well as a fair share of difficulties, not beiing regarded as smooth running engines but nevertheless blessed with good gradient climbing capabilities, coupled with an ability to work a variety of duties throughout the whole of the Western Region network. In the far West country the four strong County allocation at Laira, together with the pair at Truro and trio at Penzance were used to their best advantage, whilst the six at Shrewsbury put in some fine performances on the North to West rosters, working on a day out and day return basis from Shrewsbury right through to Newton Abbot". Paul Warner adds "I would support the idea that this is indeed the west end of Whitland station. The photographer has gone beyond the down platform and is stood opposite west signal box, hence it not being seen in the photograph. The layout, signalling seen, telegraph poles and single line token post (left foreground) verify the location".
