I have unfortunately failed to record the date of my shot of 1009, "County of Carmarthen" seen her at Swindon in the mid 'fifties but I suspect that this dates from 1955 when the engine went into the Works for substantial improvements of the draughting arrangements.
The first member of the class, number 1000, was equipped with a very large copper capped double chimney from new, the only "County" so equipped but although it looked impressive it did not increase the engine's steaming capabilities, hence 1009 being the subject of the 1955 experiments.
It looks as though quite a bit of the smokebox interior has been removed in preparation for the new chimney which was fitted before it returned back to duty from its home shed at Bristol Bath Road.
