Peter Kerslake says "Withdrawal of the first Counties had begun in the year before this picture, with 1003 1007 and 1022 the first to go. 1006 County of Cornwall, formerly and appropriately allocated as far west as you can go, at Penzance, is far from its earlier haunts but still performing a familiar duty on a milk train working, but now heading to the Capital with milk from Welsh farms rather than from those in Cornwall.
A County was invaraibly the chosen form of motive power for the daily heavily loaded milk train workings in the mid 'fifties, running from West Cornwall to Kensington and picking up additional loaded tank wagons as it progressed through Cornwall and Devon."
