1011 1964-01-05 Swindon
Destined to be the last of the class but seen here on lowly PW work. Formerly one of Bristol Bath Road's six of the class in happier times the condition here of poor old 1011, County of Chester; reflects the general state of things in this, her last year in service, the engine being the last to survive some two years after the first three Counties, namely 1003, 1007 and 1022 were condemned in 1962. It was testimony to the wide range of duties that the thirty members of the class were capable of performing that their number was spread over no less than eight Motive Power Depots in 1956, but it was down in Cornwall that they excelled, with Penzance having three and Truro two on their respective allocations, in addition to four being at Plymouth's Laira. Rostered regularly to express passenger workings in both directions between Penzance and Plymouth, including the Cornish Riviera Express, the Counties were daily favourites for the very heavy milk trains coming up from the Duchy, and Laira's Running Foreman would regularly favour one for the afternoon such working following its arrival at Plymouth for the onward run up to Kensington . Thanks to the Great Western Society 1014, County of Glamorgan is being reconstructed at Didcot, and such work is presently progressing well. Amanda Hambidge saysI remember seeing 1011 at Tyseley, both before and after the last county excursion which took place in the summer of 1964 she cleaned up well, I wish I'd have had a camera in those days for all those times I went round the shed before being caught and thrown out
