1004 1953-05-31 Bristol Bath Road

Peter Kerslake says "1004 County of Somerset was allocated to Swindon in the mid 'fifties, so is not far from home here, all coaled up and ready for its next call to duty but not before someone has hopefully seen to that massive lump of coal atop the tender before it falls off!

At about this period Bath Road itself had six "Counties" on its books, the remaining twenty four being spread over seven other depots, from as far North as Shrewsbury and Chester down to the far West at Penzance.

Bath Road depot was constructed by the Great Western Railway in 1934 and closed to steam in September 1960 when its surviving locomotives were transferred firstly to St . Philip's Marsh and then when that depot closed to the former Midland shed at Barrow Road where they remained until December 1965.
