At the time of this photograph, coal production at Valleyfield Colliery near Culross had recently come to an end. Along with No 60, this engine worked the site and continued to do so for a while, normally only one engine in steam -usually No 60, for clearing operations and shunting the landsale depot. No 53 (AB 1807/1923) was eventually sold to Thomas Muir scrap merchants of Kirkaldy in August 1970. Here it languished, intact, awaiting a buyer for many years.
