No 1 1967-12-07 Wellesley

A historic locomotive, this was the first engine purchased by the Wemyss Coal Company (WPR) in 1901 (AB 764/96). At the time of coal Nationalisation it was a pit locomotive and so was inherited by the NCB, but retained its No 1.
When bought by the WCC it was named Lady Lilian after Randolf Wemyss’ wife but when the couple were divorced, the name was removed. (Randolf Wemyss was the man who funded and built the WPR.)
