Industrial Austerity Charles 1960s Ellenbrook Sidings Walkden system

Industrial Austerity Charles 1960s Ellenbrook Sidings Walkden system

CHARLES was Hudswell Clarke 1778 of 1944. Early in 1964 she (he?) was rebuilt with the boiler off WASP and the tank off WARSPITE, but retained the crude elongated bunker associated with earlier trials to reduce smoke by burning a mix of coal and coke. This is Ellenbrook Sidings, an interchange with the BR (ex LNWR) Wigan to Eccles line and the photographer is looking towards Wigan. Church spire in far background is Tyldesley Parish Church, railway cottages should on the left of picture. Bridge in background is Parr Brow, A577. Brake van detached, and Jim Carters loco will be waiting to reverse to pick up, collect van and off to Patricroft North Sdgs.
