Not even the 'state of the art' in 1962, 'Metro-Vic' Co-Bo No. D5705 heads north past the yards at Farington Junction with a train from Manchester. It is approaching Croston Road overbridge; Fowler Lane bridge is in the distance with Farington Junction between the two bridges. No doubt it is making a wonderful 2-cylinder sound on its way home to Barrow on 17th July. It was newly returned to traffic on 27th June 1962 after spending eight months undergoing major rectification work at the Metropolitan Vickers factory. Problems with the design had emerged almost as soon as the locomotives entered service and by early 1960 the Class was suffering frequent mechanical failures with just three of the twenty available for traffic and the others in store. Many were declared unserviceable whilst British Railways and the manufacturers argued over who should pay to make the locomotives more reliable. Finally, agreement was reached and they began to be returned to the manufacturers at Dukinfield to receive modifications to the troublesome Crossley diesel engines and a general overhaul. No. D5705 is now preserved on the East Lancs Railway after departmental service saved it from the scrapheap.
