NSR No2, Charles 1960s Ashton's Field Walkden

SIR ROBERT and CHARLES are raising steam near Walkden before departing for Ashton’s Field in the mid-1960s. There was a long running problem with complaints of smoke, both from residents who backed onto the steep inclines and the District Council as the line passed close to Walkden town centre. Both these locos are fitted with a ring of steam jets around the top of their chimneys controlled by a valve in the cab to act as a blower, officially to aid combustion, cynics would said it was just to replace black smoke with more acceptable white smoke!
