6837 1958-06-26 Royal Albert Bridge
GWR Grange 4-6-0 No 6837 Forthampton Grange with an up Milk Train crosses the Royal Albert Bridge from Saltash on 26 June 1958. Interestingly tagged at the back are two Cordon gas tanks before a second full brake.
Peter Kerslake says "A view from the bridge over Normandy Way leading down to the slipways from where many U.S.A. servicemen left for France in 1944 with 6837 'Forthampton Grange' from Penzance shed heading the daily 12:20 p.m. milk from Penzance, picking up additional loaded tank wagons at St. Erth and possibly Lostwithiel and possibly also at Saltash.
Unusually this working has collected a couple of gas wagons as well which will be added to a Swindon bound parcels service at some time after being dropped off at Plymouth.
6837 will hand the milk over to a fresh engine at Plymouth's North Road, invariably a 'County' which will have a a pilot engine to Newton Abbot before heading on its own to West Kensington after collecting additional loaded milk tanks at Totnes and possibly also at Exeter, Cullompton and Wellington."
