The daily afternoon milk train from Cornwall to Kensington was always double headed between Plymouth and Newton Abbot over the South Devon banks , and here we have Laira's 7031 , " Cromwells Castle " as train engine with Penzance allocated 6824 " Ashley Grange " assisting as they approach Newton Abbot station where 6824 will come off , this duty completed.
This working was a favourite for members of the " County " class , but we have a " Castle " on this particular day .
This train would have collected additional fully filled milk tanks on its journey through Cornwall , and additionally at Totnes , on the other side of Dainton bank , from the important railside creamery there.
By the time it reached London later that evening the load would have been substantially increased .
