6848 1950s Totnes

6848 1950s Totnes

Laira shed's rather grubby looking 6848 , " Toddington Grange " has dropped down from Rattery bank and now runs through Totnes station on an Up Vans service , with the four tracks at this location being evident in this picture.
A banking engine will be required to assist from here , probably one of Newton Abbot's 2-6-2 tank engines kept here for such duties , because the one in thirty six grade of Dainton bank lies between here at Totnes , and Newton Abbot the next station up the line.
Four tracks are here at Totnes in order to permit non stop workings to maintain speed through the station in both directions for the climbs to Dainton and Rattery summits on either side , Totnes being situate in the deep valley of the River Dart.
Note the milk tank wagon in the background , Totnes being a major pick up point of such fully loaded tank wagons fom the creamery here by the daily afternoon milk train from Penzance when it called here on its way to London
