A pair of Granges. This is a most unusual and extremely interesting photograph as double heading east of Newton Abbot was virtually unheard of in the ' fifties , but the photographer has captured such a rare event here at Teignmouth. Train Reporting Number 655 is , according to my records , the 8.00.a.m. from Newquay to Manchester , a'West to North' express running via the Severn Tunnel to Shrewsbury and Crewe. For some reason those in control at Newton Abbot have kept the pilot engine , which has assisted over the South Devon banks from Plymouth , at the head of the train rather than , as was the customary practice, to have detached it at Newton Abbot , but perhaps the view was taken that a single' Grange' would have struggled on its own to Bristol Temple Meads as the train does look to be formidable in length. A very nice shot , and a rare spectacle!
