There are some interesting wagons in the background, that looks like a 6 wheeled dropside wagon with hipped ends (probably of NBR origin) to the left of the tender. It is in the breakdown train.
Peter Kerslake adds "The Crewe North enginemen and their engines worked the demanding rosters which took them to Perth. Often loaded to sixteen coaches approaching 600 tons in weight. Most of these duties were overnight turns working back home again the following day."
