LMS Coronation 4-6-2 No. 46256 Sir William Stanier F.R.S. climbs Beattock at Harthope with a northbound express in spring 1961.
Andrew Vines says "Close inspection of a large print of this image reveals that the coaching stock exactly matches the winter 60/61 booked formation for the 11.0 Birmingham Scotch. This would tally with the date of Spring 1961 as the Euston trains had already been dieselised but not the Birmingham. The sun angle also looks right for the booked passing time of 4.30pm, with the relatively low angle suggesting it is before the hour change and therefore likely to be March. One can only imagine the photographer's reaction as this beautifully turned out Pacific came pounding up the grade in stunning light."
