1474 1920s York Station

1474 1920s York Station

Ex-North Eastern Railway Rennant '1463' (LNER 'E5') class 2-4-0 No. 1474. Built at Gateshead in June 1885 as NER No. 1474 and withdrawn in February 1929. Ex-Midland Railway Johnson '2P' class 4-4-0 No. 401. Built at Derby in August 1891 as MR No. 11 and withdrawn in September 1953 as BR No. 40401.

This location at the south end of York Station was (possibly still is?) a favourite of photographers for over a century. With scenes like this 1920s gem of already elderly LNER and LMS locomotives adjacent, it's hardly surprising! LMS 401 gave no less than 62 years of service before withdrawal.
