62701 1948 York MPD

62701 1948 York MPD

Ex-LNER Gresley 'D49/1' class 4-4-0 No. 62701 'Derbyshire'. Built at Darlington in Nov. 1927 as LNER No. 251 and withdrawn in September 1959.

Even through the grime, the newly acquired cabside number of 62701 can (just) be discerned at York MPD in 1948. However, the tender still announces that 'Derbyshire' is an LNER locomotive! Such were the oddities of the 'crossover' period in early BR days. The tender of an apple green liveried 'A3' is seen behind with the full 'British Railways' applied before the 'lion & wheel' totem had been designed.
