LNER Thompson 'A2/3' class 4-6-2 No. 516 'Hycilla'. Built at Doncaster in November 1946 and withdrawn in November 1962 as BR No. 60516.

Written history has not been kind to Edward Thompson's Pacific designs. Undoubtedly the 'A2/3s' as new build locomotives (rather than his rebuilds of the Gresley P2s), were the best of the bunch and performed well if not spectacularly. They also carried delightful names as did most of the A2 variants. This June 1948 portrait is at York MPD.
