The London, Tilbury & Southend Railway used these Thomas Whitelegg designed '3P' Atlantic (4-4-2) Tanks extensively on express passenger services and the LMS continued to build more making 39 in total. However, once other more modern types arrived in the form of Stanier and Fairburn 2-6-4 Tanks, their usefulness was severely diminished and they were scattered across the LMS system on lesser duties. 41947 was at Toton MPD in Nottinghamshire in August 1956 and would normally have been used on the Worksop to Nottingham local passenger trains.
