Peter Kerslake says "Meldon Quarry, situated just west of Okehampton on the former Southern Railway line from Plymouth to Exeter, was a source of ballast from 1897. This view shows a number of the eighty 40T hopper wagons used at the quarry, and trains were limited to a maximum load of ten of these at any time".
