75026 1950s Barmouth

75026 1950s Barmouth

Estimated date, I'm not sure if it is black or green. Peter Kerslake says I am sadly not fully familiar with 75026's history during the early and mid ' sixties , but following her earlier years allocated to Plymouth's Laira Depot from new in early 1954 this locomotive was in the early ' sixties to be found here in Wales as this view from Barmouth confirms , a number of her class working the longer passenger services on the Cambrian lines , especially those running between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury during the late days of steam operations in mid Wales . Both 75026 together with her equally new sister engine 75025 were initially put to use in 1954 by Laira as pilot engines to Top Link passenger workings over the South Devon banks between Plymouth and Newton Abbot , supplementing the Laira nd Newton Abbot Manors which had for so long been the mainstay of such piloting duties , but the arrival of the Diesels in the early ' sixties eventually did away with the need for their services . This engine's last days were also spent in assisting others , but now as a banker rather than as a pilot engine , as by early 1967 this engine had left the Cambrian lines and together with eight other Standard Class Fours were used as banking engines to both freights and passenger workings assisting them over Shap in the Westmorland Fells until late 1967 when the need for such banking duties diminished . Quite a varied life spent initially in the far Westcountry , then mid Wales and finally in th far North !
