30919 1957-03 St. Leonards MPD

30919 1957-03 St. Leonards MPD

Ex-Southern Railway Maunsell 'V' or 'Schools' class 4-4-0 No. 30919 'Harrow'. Built at Eastleigh in June 1933 as SR No. 919 and withdrawn in Feb. 1961. St. Leonards MPD, Kent seen here in March 1957, is one of relatively few BR sheds with a cliff face backdrop. Liverpool Brunswick, Machynlleth and Kyle of Lochalsh are three, are there more? The Bulleid modification of Lemaitre multiple jet blastpipes to some locos required these ugly wide chimneys to be fitted to the 'Schools'. They did nothing for the looks (or performance) of arguably the best 4-4-0s in Britain.
