65539 1959-04-19 Stratford MPD

Ex-Great Eastern Railway J. Holden 'F48' (LNER 'J17') class 0-6-0 No. 65539. Built at Stratford in February 1902 as GER No. 1189 and withdrawn in August 1960.

Stratford MPD in April 1959 is the location for this portrait of grubby 65539 one of James Holden's sixty 'J16s'. They were designed as freight locomotives but were frequently used quite successfully on passenger turns. The class survived until 1962 and 65567 is preserved as part of the National Collection.
