65555 1956-10-12 Stratford MPD

65555 1956-10-12 Stratford MPD

Ex-Great Eastern Railway J.Holden 'G58' (LNER 'J17') class 0-6-0 No. 65555. Built at Stratford in January 1903 as GER No. 1205 and withdrawn in March 1960.

When built, the 'J17s' were the UK's largest 0-6-0 tender locomotives. Over the years, various modifications such as Belpaire fireboxes, superheaters and Ross 'Pop' safety valves were fitted. They seldom strayed from former GER metals. 65567 has been preserved as part of the national collection. Sparkling ex-works 65555 is seen at Stratford in October 1956.
