42331 1960-01-02 Market Harborough

Ex-LMS Fowler '4P' class 2-6-4 Tank No. 42331. Built at Derby in February 1929 as LMS No. 2331 and withdrawn in September 1962.

The many 'last day' closure events that the Beeching era wrought upon Britain's railways were usually captured on film in daylight hours. At Market Harborough Station on Saturday 2nd January 1960, Les Hanson has broken that convention with a Northampton line train. Curiously, the line re-opened days later and then closed again in 1969. Now it gets stranger, it re-opened yet again in 1972 and finally gasped its last in August 1981 only for part of it to be a preserved line!
