42422 1961-05 Lickey

42422 1961-05 Lickey

42422 has just left Blackwell station (in background) and going "over the top" onto the lickey incline, down towards Bromsgrove. It was allocated to Saltley from August 1960 until withdrawn in December 1962. Note the “calling-on” arm below the Down Starter - it was used to allow returning bankers to return to Bromsgrove more quickly than they otherwise could under normal block working. By using permissive working, where more than one train was allowed in a block section, they could follow a freight train down the bank.

All the comments about the"calling-on"signal apply to the "Down Side",and also to the "up"side through the station as shown.

This is a really nice shot , and the severity of the two mile grade is well apparent , with a couple of enthusiasts on the left , plus what looks like at least one on the train.
It is hard to believe that the whole of this area is today so overgrown , with Blackwell station sadly no longer with us
