2818 1960-09 Westbury
Ex-works GWR 28XX 2-8-0 No 2818 at Westbury shed in September 1960.
Peter Kerslake says "Resplendent in new colours and clearly fresh from Swindon Works 2818 was one of the initial batch of Churchward's class of heavy freight engines, the first twenty, coupled with 3000 gallon tenders coming into service from 1903.
2818 has no shedplate in position, but had been allocated to 82C which was Swindon a few years earlier. After withdrawal was chosen for preservation as the oldest of her class with inside main steam pipes.Following a post-withdrawal cosmetic restoration at the Southern Region's Eastleigh Works 2818 was stored at Avonmouth from 1967 with plans for display at nearby Bristol, but in the event 2818 was one of the first locomotives to go to the National Railway Museum at York in 1975."
