4707 1954-08-14 Langley
GWR 47XX 2-8-0 No 4707 passes Langley with the 5.14pm Paddinghton to Weston-super-Mare on August 14, 1954.
Peter Kerslake says "The driver of 4707 has shut off steam but his fireman could well be adding coal to the fire as they lay a smokescreen passing Langley signal box on a down working on the Bristol line from Paddington in 1954.
The last of her class 4707 would have been well able to handle tightly timed and heavily loaded Top Link passenger workings such as this despite being classified as just a Mixed Traffic design, and a "4700" would often work down from Paddington to Newton Abbot or Plymouth on a passenger express, especially on Saturdays during the Summer months.
4707 was a London engine, spending most of her time at Old Oak Common with just a few years at Southall before being one of the last three remaining in service, namely 4707, 4704 and 4703 all of which were withdrawn in May of 1964."
