4702 1937-09-04 Chester

GWR 47XX 2-8-0 No 4702 at Chester shed on 4th September 1937.

Peter Kerslake says "This fine view shows the impressive bulk and classic design of Churchward's "4700" class, with 4702 caught at a sunlit Chester Depot in 1937.
Introduced in 1919, but with just nine being built , the class were handsome locomotives, well able to handle heavy and fast fitted freights, often working overnight, and being concentrated during their working lives in and around the London area, although one would sometimes turn up at Plymouth in the mid 'fifties, either on a freight from Bristol or after working a Summer Saturday passenger duty down from Paddington.
Sadly, 4702 was the first of the class to be condemned in November of 1962 from Southall Depot, being disposed of at Swindon Works shotly thereafter".
