4708 1950s Old Oak Common

4708 1950s Old Oak Common

GWR 47XX 2-8-0 No 4708 at Old Oak Common in c1955.

Peter Kerslake says "The last of Mr. Churchward's final designed locomotives 4708 is here at its home shed at Old Oak Common, the class of nine firstly emerging from Swindon in May of 1919.
Requested by Swindon's Traffic Department Mr. Churchward's powerful 2-8-0 was his answer, a design capable of handling heavily loaded express parcels and perishables traffic, especially during night time, the class accordingly being dubbed 'Night Owls'.
From their early days and even in the early 1960's the class were also used on express passenger duties and on Summer Saturdays in 1962 one would appear regularly on the down 'Royal Duchy', the 1:30p.m. from Paddington, the engine and crew working through to Plymouth."
