42xx 1951-04 Saltash

A 42XX 2-8-0T crosses the Royal Albert bridge with a goods train as the Saltash Corpoation ferry loads up in April 1951.

Peter Kerslake says "This is the little Saltash ferry on the Plymouth side of the Tamar, 1000 feet wide at this point, this single ferry operating between the slipway at Saltash to the slipway here and remaining in service until the early 1960's when the new road bridge came into operation . If you missed this one you had a 30 minutes wait at either side and the slipways are still in position today.
Two larger ferries operated down river between Devonport and Torpoint and the jetty beyond the Royal Albert runs into the armaments depot hidden in the hillside and is used for barges to take torpedoes etc. to warships in Plymouth Sound, it being too dangerous to load or unload here."
