60857 1961-03 London Kings Cross

60857 1961-03 London Kings Cross

Peter Kerslake says " Gresley "V2" number 60857 is probably still a Doncaster based locomotive in this 1961 image, one of the class which were truly "Maids of all work", capable of handling express passenger duties as seen here in adddition to taking fully fitted and fast freights such as the "Scotch Goods" from the Capital to Scotland.
Her coaches are emerging fom the depths of the 528 yards long Gasworks tunnel below the Regents Canal and the York Road and she will have earlier come down the 1 in 107 drop into Copenhagen tunnel and passed below the bridge with its North London line.
Whilst the Kings Cross enginemen were familiar with this steep descent down through the tunnels and then straight into the terminus those drivers from further afield, and in particular the Gateshead men, often found this final stretch of line difficult to work, often resulting in some spectacular arrivals at the platforms!"
