60865 1963-02 Walton

By the hard winter of February 1963, the ex-MR Sandal & Walton Station near Wakefield was already closed (in June '61). It had become the new home of the erstwhile 'Wakefield Railfans Club' of which I was a member. The station posessed several traditional galvanized dustbins that had been jokingly named and numbered in disrepectful homage to the ten BR class 44 diesels D1/2/3 etc. I never thought I'd see a photo but here in this very monochrome-ish image is the evidence that 'D1' 'Scafell Pike' existed, perhaps at least as long as it's namesake!
Meanwhile ex-LNER Gresley V2 No. 60865 hurries by towards Leeds, enjoyed by the assembled group of young WRC members. 60865 was built at Darlington in June 1939 as LNER No. 4836 and was withdrawn in June 1965.
