Peter Kerslake says "10203 was the third of the Southern Region's mainline diesels, emerging from Brighton Works in March 1954 and was more powerful than the two earlier locomotives built at Ashford Works. Fitted with a Mark 2 English Electric 2000 hp engine it was allocated to Nine Elms Depot working on Waterloo to Exeter Central passenger duties."
