With roof mounted warning horns and square topped yellow warning panel it carries the later type of headboard as it waits to head south.

Peter Kerslake says "A group of two older enginemen together with a younger member all have nicely polished shoes apparent as they discuss the merits of the three months old Deltic "Argyll and Sutherland Highlander" heading the Kings Cross bound "Elizabethan" as she awaits her departure time from here at Edinburgh Waverly in August of 1962.
In common with Deltics D9020 "Nimbus" and D9019 "Royal Highland Fusilier" this Deltic had her four warning horns mounted on the cab roof tops, as had the pioneer blue DP1, but the horns were later moved to the buffer beams in order to overcome damage when the locomotives were within the automatic cleaning plants.
The last of her class D9021 entered service in May of 1962 and was based at Haymarket depot, lasting in service until December of 1981."
