D9004 1961 Manchester Ordsall Lane Station

D9004 1961 Manchester Ordsall Lane Station

D9004 passes Liverpool Road Junction sometime in 1961, apparently on its way back from Newton-le-Willows, after attendance for bogie repairs. It was delivered to BR on 18th. May 1961 at Doncaster Works, after which it was allocated to 64B Haymarket depot. Its cleanliness suggests that it has been in work for a while and this doesn't appear to be on its first delivery journey.

It is seen just to the east of the disused Ordsall Lane Station and is crossing over from the fast to the slow lines to take the curve round through Salford and Manchester Victoria, presumably on its way back over to York and the ECML.
The local lines to Knott Mill and Deansgate have branched off beyond the left of the picture and the fitting in the foreground leads to the turntable situated in the fork of the junction. This served the nearby Liverpool Road goods station and enabled incoming engines to turn without having to travel to Patricroft and block valuable paths on the main line.

The loco is directly above Wilburn Street Bridge. The large building in the background, standing on Hampson Street, was the original Jackson works. The firm of P.R. Jackson dated back to 1840 and its early years were spent rolling tyres for railway wheels. It later expanded into making heavy gears and was taken over by David Brown (he of tractor fame) in 1931.
Dorman and Smith were heavy electrical contractors. The works in Middlewood Street closed in 1958, when production transferred to their Preston factory.
