Penzance 1952-04-19

It is raining outside as a young lad takes in the pleasures of Penzance station on 19th April 1952. If the platform 1 number is anything to go by the signage is still pure GWR as are the lamps hanging from the roof. The three main platforms are all occupied by ex GWR coaches, the products of Collett and Hawksworth although there may be a ‘toplight’ vehicle from the turn of the century as part of the train in platform 1. None of the coach destination boards are readable so they may wellbe turned over onto their blank sides, and note the grill protecting the glass on the droplight of the brake 3rd, a standard GWR fitting. Outside the station roof the Royal Mail train is parked in its usual position but there is not an engine to be seen anywhere – let’s hope our lad did not get too wet looking for one!
