61863 1950s Stratford
The unique K5, 2-cylindered 2-6-0, rebuilt by Thompson from a Gresley K3 (3-cylindered). The rebuild was practically a new engine with B1 type cylinders and a newly designed higher pressure boiler. Little more than the cab of the original was retained. No 61863 spent its career at two sheds (New England and Stratford) which were well known for maintaining fleets of filthy engines so it is hardly surprising that it looks quite grubby in this photograph.
