663 1920s Hull Botanic Gardens MPD

663 1920s Hull Botanic Gardens MPD

Ex-North Eastern Railway T.W.Worsdell 'F' (LNER 'D22') class 4-4-0 No. 663. Built at Gateshead in December 1887 and withdrawn in October 1932 as LNER No. 663.

The NER 'F' 4-4-0s were once the company's premier locomotives, successfully featuring in the famed "Races to the North" during 1888. They also handled most of the services between Newcastle and Edinburgh. By the 1920s they had been relegated to secondary duties, many seeing out their days on Yorkshire coastal routes. No. 663 had originally been a 2-cylinder compound but was rebuilt to simple in January 1900.
