North Eastern Railway Worsdell 'R' (LNER 'D20') class 4-4-0 No. 725. Built at Gateshead in Dec. 1906 and withdrawn in Apr. 1951 as BR No. 62379. The Worsdell 'R' class 4-4-0s were magnificent machines and never more so than when they made their entrance with a copper-capped chimney, brass oval numberplate, brass splasher edges and safety valve 'trumpet' with the deep Saxony Green livery of the NER. In the shed yard at York, 725 has all these pre-WW1 features along with a crew 'embellishment' of a shield on the smokebox door. A common practice in NER days but frowned upon by the powers that be. Spoilsports!
Note the apparent difference in tender colour because of condensation on a chilly day.
