Ex-North Eastern Railway Worsdell 'R' (LNER 'D20') class 4-4-0 No. 62386. Built at Gateshead in Aug. 1907 as NER No. 1207 and withdrawn in Oct. 1956. I think the 'D20's' were one of the finest classes of 4-4-0 to run in Britain, they were certainly appreciated by their crews. Arriving in lovely evening light at Selby is 62386 with a 'local' from Leeds in August 1952. The appearance of these locomotives was changed considerably by fitting the more 'modern' dished smokebox doors as boilers were changed. The NER chimneys were either the plain variety (as here) or with a 'windjabber' raised front lip. If you wanna be fancy, you can call that a 'capuchon', I bet the crews never did!
