Sometimes the 'scaling up' of a succesful design such as the NER 'R' class (LNER 'D20') does not produce the expected performance. Thus it was with Wilson Worsdell's 'R1' (LNER 'D21') class of ten locomotives for the North Eastern Railway. Nonetheless, they were impressive looking machines but were outclassed by newer Gresley designs and soon relegated to lesser duties. 1244 in the early 1920s at York Station was built at Darlington in July 1909 and was withdrawn in October 1944 as LNER No. 1244.
