90558 1960s Normanton Goose Hill Junction

90558 1960s Normanton Goose Hill Junction

Riddles 'WD' class 2-8-0 No. 90558. Built by Vulcan Foundry in September 1943 as WD No. 77094 and withdrawn in November 1965.

The famous 'Goose Hill Junction' at Normanton is where the former north-south MR line and the east-west Lancashire and Yorkshire parted company. The area was the scene of intense rivalry for access to Leeds and York in the days of 'railway mania'. Here is 90558 with an up freight in the 1960s taking the Midland route. The MR route was finally closed in 1988 and all trace here has disappeared under a jungle of unchecked vegetation.
