70022 1953-07 Teignmouth

70022 1953-07 Teignmouth

BR Riddles 'Standard Britannia' class 4-6-2 No. 70022 'Tornado'. Built at Crewe in August 1951 and withdrawn in December 1967.

Most of today's enthusiasts will (rightfuly) associate the name 'Tornado' with the incredible story and achievements of 'A1' 60163. Here is BR's earlier version as seen at Dawlish in July 1953, another fine Pacific 'Standard Britannia' 70022. No less than six earlier locomotives had carried the name beginning in 1849 with one of Daniel Gooch's GWR broad gauge 'Iron Duke' class 4-2-2s.
Peter Kerslake adds "70022 is passing under Eastcliff Bridge; the cutting on this side of Teignmouth station was originally the 320 yards long East Teignmouth Tunnel with the West Tunnel of 267 yards located at the far end of the station which was built between them. Both tunnels were opened out between 1879 and 1883".
