90621 1956-08-28 Manchester Exchange Station

90621 1956-08-28 Manchester Exchange Station

Ex-War Department Riddles 'WD' class 2-8-0 No. 90621. Built by Vulcan Foundry of Newton-le-Willows in Feb. 1944 as WD No. 77484 and withdrawn in Nov. 1965. 90621 worked the 12.10pm Huddersfield- Manchester Victoria and 3.15pm Manchester Exchange – Leeds City, as far as Huddersfield, on Bank Holiday Saturday, 28 August 1956 . 90621 was pressed into service after 45339 failed with a cracked frame, making a relatively unusual sight on a passenger train. Such a dreadfully unkempt external appearance of the locomotive can only serve to endorse the negative opinions of the traveling public regarding steam. "Dirty. or Filthy" were the usual and hardly surprising comments.
