70018 1956-06 Castle Cary

70018 1956-06 Castle Cary

With a '600' reporting number, and charging eastbound through the ex-GWR's Castle Cary Station in Somerset is BR Riddles 'Standard Britannia' 70018 'Flying Dutchman'. This name was that of a legendary ghost ship that could never make port, and was doomed to sail the oceans forever!
Reporting number 600 denotes the early morning 7.15a.m. from Plymouth to Paddington, and 70018 would be working home from Plymouth after an overnight stop over at Laira depot to its home at Old Oak Common with Laira's cleaners not bothering to clean someone else's engine!
Delivered from new to Old Oak in company with 70017 "Arrow" in June of 1951, 70018 remained there until a move to Cardiff Canton in December 1956, finally being condemned from Carlisle Kingmoor in December 1966. Photo dated June 1956.
