550xx Engine 1982 Doncaster Works
The Napier power unit in the scrap yard.
Peter Kerslake says "A remarkable close up of a partially stripped down Napier two stroke eighteen cylinder engine as used in the Class 55 Deltics, the joint venture between English Electric and the Napier Company.
With this view being from 1982 this unit is probably from one of the last of the class, the final four being withdrawn that same year.
This power unit, developed from an original German aero engine design and then used by Napiers for both aircraft and marine use before powering firstly the Blue Deltic DP1 and then the twenty two productton run of Deltic locomotives had three separate crankshafts and engine blocks arranged in a triangular form as seen here and generated 1650 brake horse power, the deltic locomotives having two of them!
Two of the cylinder heads can be seen in this view, the third being situated at the base of this unit."
