9503 1938-07-31 Eastfield MPD

Ex-North British Railway Reid 'K' or 'Glen' (LNER 'D34') class 4-4-0 No. 9503 'Glen Arklet'. Built at Cowlairs in May 1920 as NBR No. 503 and withdrawn in September 1959 as BR No. 62487.

Peering out from the gloomy shed interior at Glasgow's Eastfield MPD we see 'Glen Arklet' in this July 1937 portrait. The thirty two locomotives of William Reid's 'Glen' class are probably his best-known design. Fortunately, classmate 'Glen Douglas' was been preserved in NBR livery. Regrettably, she has not been in steam since 1962 following three years of enthusiasts' railtours.
